In this case (War and Peace), the Kindle edition is NOT the translation that's mentioned in the product description (Pevear and Volokhonsky). Take this short sentence: Kápli kápali. With an occasional break, it took me five months to finish the 800 pages of “Anna Karenina”, I probably should have expected not to enjoy “Anna Karenina” very much, because when I read “War and Peace”, I enjoyed the war and was often bored by the peace. Zhivago is not a novel in the usual sense. There is no war in “Anna Karenina”, except in Anna's and Levin's souls. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I opted to use the Richard Pevear/Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace for numerous reasons. Not that any translation really could. This enormous, 4-pound, 1,273-page Vintage Classics edition of War and Peace tipped the helmet. When Pevear and Volokhonsky translated it, they kept the French with the English translation as a footnote. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. What War and Peace is, I suppose, it the biggest and baddest attempt at experimental/historical fiction ever attempted. This new version by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky — who most recently, in 2007, gave us their War and Peace— won't change that. The same issue of being loyal to stylistic sound effects pervades the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. He puts this monolingual reader to shame.
